About Lübeck
Lübeck: Brick Gothic Capital of the Baltic Trade World
Lübeck, founded in 1143 on a river island between the Trave and Wakenitz, served as the leading city of the Hanseatic League for over three centuries. The Holstentor, a twin-towered brick gate built in 1478, marks the western entrance to the old town — a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. Seven church spires rise above the Altstadt, including the 125-metre towers of St. Marienkirche, the model for over 70 churches across northern Europe. The city is also the birthplace of novelist Thomas Mann (born 1875) and marzipan maker Niederegger, operating from Breite Straße since 1806.
Where to Stay in Lübeck
Hotels cluster around the Altstadt island and near Lübeck Hauptbahnhof, a 12-minute walk from the Holstentor. The Gründerviertel quarter along An der Untertrave offers riverside options with views of the historic salt warehouses. Travellers visiting Travemünde, the city's Baltic Sea resort district, find beachfront properties 20 km northeast by regional train.
