About Accra
Accra: West Africa's Atlantic Capital
Accra sits on Ghana's Gulf of Guinea coastline, roughly 230 km west of the Volta River delta. Founded as a trading post in the 17th century and declared capital of the Gold Coast colony in 1877, the city today holds an estimated 2.5 million residents across Greater Accra. The Jamestown district preserves colonial-era lighthouses and the colonial fort that once anchored Atlantic trade routes. East of the centre, Osu and Airport Residential Area concentrate the city's international restaurants, embassies, and mid-range to 4-star hotels.
Where to Stay in Accra
Hotels cluster in three corridors. Cantonments and the Airport area draw business travellers — both zones sit within 10 km of Kotoka International Airport (ACC). Labadi Beach, roughly 8 km east of Jamestown, anchors leisure stays with direct beach access and is home to the Labadi Beach Hotel, a landmark since 1987. The Osu strip along Oxford Street offers guesthouses and boutique hotels a short walk from craft markets and nightlife.
Practical Tips
- Currency: Ghana Cedi (GHS); USD widely accepted at hotels but cedi rates are better at forex bureaux on High Street.
- Airport transfer: Kotoka Airport sits 10 km north of the city centre; ride-hail apps (Bolt, Uber) operate reliably.
- Best timing: November to March brings the dry Harmattan season — cooler mornings and lower humidity than the April–June rains.
