About Kumasi
Kumasi: Ashanti Capital and Craft Centre of Ghana
Kumasi sits at the geographic heart of Ghana, 270 km north of Accra by road. As the seat of the Ashanti Kingdom — one of West Africa's most powerful historical empires — the city draws historians, cultural travellers, and traders alike. The Manhyia Palace, rebuilt in 1925, still functions as the official residence of the Asantehene and houses a museum chronicling Ashanti royalty. The Kejetia Market, one of the largest open-air markets in West Africa with over 10,000 stalls, anchors the commercial district and sells kente cloth, brass weights, and fresh produce in equal measure.
Where to Stay and Getting Around
Most hotels cluster around the Adum and Nhyiaeso neighbourhoods, both within 2 km of Kejetia. The Kumasi City Mall on Lake Road provides a useful orientation landmark for the central zone. Shared taxis and trotros (minibuses) connect the city's districts; the main intercity bus terminal at Kejetia links Kumasi to Accra (4–5 hours) and Tamale to the north.
Practical Tips
- Currency: Ghana Cedi (GHS); ATMs are available in Adum and at major hotels.
- Best months: November to March offers drier conditions.
- Kejetia Market: Arrive before 10 a.m. to avoid peak-hour congestion.
- Cultural sites: The National Cultural Centre on Bantama Road hosts kente weavers and wood carvers on-site.
