About Syntagma
The Heart of Athens
Syntagma — Constitution Square — sits at the very center of Athens, where ancient history and modern city life collide on a daily basis. Named after the constitution King Otto was pressured to grant in 1843, this district is the political, commercial, and symbolic core of the Greek capital. Whether you're arriving by metro, stepping off a bus, or walking down from the Acropolis, chances are your path leads here.
What to See and Do
The square itself is dominated by the Hellenic Parliament building, housed in the former Royal Palace. Every hour, and with particular ceremony on Sundays at 11:00, the famous Evzone guards perform the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier — a ritual that draws crowds year-round. The choreography is precise and the traditional uniforms are immediately recognizable, making this one of Athens' most photographed moments.
Beyond the square, Syntagma connects to some of Athens' most important streets. Ermou Street, one of Europe's busiest pedestrian shopping thoroughfares, leads west toward Monastiraki. The National Garden lies just behind the Parliament, offering a shaded escape from the city heat with ponds, peacocks, and quiet pathways. The Zappeion Hall, a landmark neoclassical exhibition center, sits at the garden's southern edge.
The Syntagma Metro Station is itself worth a look — excavations during its construction uncovered thousands of ancient artifacts, many of which are displayed in a small museum within the station.
Staying in Syntagma
Syntagma is one of Athens' most convenient bases for visitors. Hotels here place you within walking distance of the Acropolis, Plaka, the Monastiraki flea market, and major museums. The area is well-served by the Athens Metro (Line 2 and Line 3 intersect at Syntagma), making day trips to Piraeus or the airport straightforward.
Dining options range from casual cafés along the square to traditional Greek tavernas tucked into nearby side streets. The district also has a strong concentration of international chain hotels alongside boutique properties, giving travelers a wide range of accommodation choices.
Practical Tips
- Best time to visit: Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) offer mild weather and smaller crowds.
- Getting around: The Syntagma Metro station is the central hub of the Athens network — easy connections across the city.
- Sunday timing: Arrive before 11:00 to secure a good viewing spot for the full Changing of the Guard ceremony.
- Heat: Athens summers are intense. Carry water and plan outdoor sightseeing for early morning or late afternoon.
- Security: Syntagma Square occasionally hosts political demonstrations — check local news if traveling during politically active periods.
