About Antigua Guatemala
Antigua Guatemala: Colonial Capital Ringed by Three Volcanoes
Antigua Guatemala served as the capital of colonial Spanish Central America from 1543 until a series of earthquakes in 1773 forced relocation to present-day Guatemala City. The city sits at 1,530 metres elevation in the Panchoy Valley, flanked by Volcán Agua (3,766 m), Volcán Fuego (3,763 m, still active), and Volcán Acatenango (3,976 m). Its colonial grid holds some of the best-preserved Spanish Baroque architecture in the Americas — the Catedral de Santiago, the Arco de Santa Catalina, and the ruined Convento de las Capuchinas attract architectural historians alongside general tourists.
Where to Stay
Hotels concentrate in the central grid, within walking distance of Parque Central. The neighbourhood around La Merced church (north end) offers quieter streets with several mid-range boutique properties in restored colonial mansions. Calle del Arco, running below the Santa Catalina arch, hosts cafés and guesthouses popular with long-stay travellers studying Spanish — Antigua has more than 75 registered Spanish-language schools.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: La Aurora International Airport (GUA) in Guatemala City sits roughly 45 km east; shuttle services cover the route in about 60–75 minutes.
- Altitude: At 1,530 m, evenings cool sharply — pack a light layer year-round.
- Semana Santa: Holy Week draws tens of thousands; book accommodation three to six months ahead for that period.
