About Santiago Atitlán

Santiago Atitlán: Tz'utujil Maya Town on Lake Atitlán's Southern Shore

Santiago Atitlán sits on a narrow peninsula between two bays of Lake Atitlán, roughly 12 km by boat from Panajachel. Home to around 50,000 residents, it is one of Guatemala's largest indigenous communities and the cultural heart of the Tz'utujil Maya people. The town is known for the shrine of Maximón — a folk saint housed in a different cofradía each year — and for the hand-woven huipiles worn daily by local women, featuring purple-striped birds specific to this community. The 16th-century Santiago Apóstol parish church, completed around 1582, bears a carved facade and an interior altered after the 1976 earthquake.

Where to Stay and Getting Around

Hotels in Santiago Atitlán range from budget guesthouses along Calle Principal to mid-range lakefront properties with views toward Volcán Tolimán (3,158 m) and Volcán Atitlán (3,537 m). Lanchas (motorboats) run frequently from Panajachel and San Pedro La Laguna, taking 25–45 minutes depending on origin. Tuk-tuks cover the town's steep streets.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Lanchas from Panajachel dock at the public pier; last boats typically depart before 18:00.
  • Currency: Quetzales only; few ATMs operate reliably — carry cash from Panajachel.
  • Market days: Friday and Sunday markets draw vendors from surrounding villages.
  • Altitude: The lake sits at 1,562 m; evenings are cool year-round.
