About Copan Ruinas

Copán Ruinas: Gateway to a Maya UNESCO World Heritage Site

Copán Ruinas is a small colonial town in western Honduras, roughly 13 km from the Guatemalan border and 600 km from Tegucigalpa. Its identity is inseparable from the Copán Archaeological Park, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980. The park preserves one of the most elaborately carved Maya complexes in Mesoamerica, including the Hieroglyphic Stairway — a 63-step inscription recording 200 years of dynastic history — and the Altar Q, dated to 776 AD. Visitors also walk among 16 stelae depicting rulers of the Copán dynasty, which flourished between 400 and 820 AD.

Where to Stay and Getting Around

The town itself is compact, centered on Parque Central, where most hotels, restaurants, and tour operators sit within a few blocks. Budget guesthouses and mid-range boutique properties line the cobblestone streets of the Barrio El Centro area. Travelers arriving from San Pedro Sula (approximately 170 km northeast) typically take a 3-hour direct bus or shuttle.

Practical Tips

  • Entry fees: The archaeological site charges a separate admission from the Las Sepulturas residential complex nearby.
  • Season: The dry season runs November through April — paths through the ruins stay accessible.
  • Scarlet macaws: A free-flight macaw colony lives near the main plaza; arrive early for sightings.
  • Currency: Honduran lempiras are standard; some hotels quote rates in USD.
