About Utila
Utila: Bay Island Dive Hub off the Honduran Coast
Utila sits 29 km north of La Ceiba in the Bay Islands of Honduras, the smallest of the three main islands at roughly 42 km². First settled by English-speaking colonists in the 1830s, the island built its modern identity around affordable scuba diving — today more than 20 dive schools operate along a single main street in Utila Town, making it one of the lowest-cost places on Earth to earn an Open Water certification through Padi-affiliated operators.
Where to Stay and Getting Around
Most hotels cluster in Utila Town on the island's eastern tip, within walking distance of the main dock and dive shops. Accommodation ranges from backpacker dorms above dive centres to guesthouses on stilts over the water in the Cola de Mico Road area. The interior wetlands and mangroves are accessible by hired bicycle or local water taxi to beaches such as Chepes Beach on the north shore.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Ferries depart La Ceiba twice daily; crossing takes roughly 60–75 minutes.
- Dive season: Visibility is clearest March–September; whale sharks frequent the channel June–August.
- Currency: US dollars are accepted alongside Honduran lempiras at most businesses.
- Pack: Reef-safe sunscreen is required by local dive operators to protect the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef.
