About Chandīgarh
Chandigarh: India's Planned Capital Between Two States
Chandigarh serves as the joint capital of Punjab and Haryana, two states it administers without belonging to either. Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier designed the city in the early 1950s; construction began in 1952 after India's independence-era need for a new Punjab capital, following Lahore's transfer to Pakistan in 1947. The grid of numbered sectors — Sector 17 anchors the commercial plaza at the city's heart — gives Chandigarh an ordered layout rare among Indian cities. Wide tree-lined boulevards and enforced low-density zoning keep the streetscape relatively open.
Landmarks and Hotel Zones
Visitors arrive for the Rock Garden, a 40-acre sculpture park built from industrial debris by artist Nek Chand starting in 1957, now one of India's most-visited folk art sites. Sukhna Lake, a 3 km reservoir at the foot of the Shivalik Hills, draws morning walkers and boat-hire crowds year-round. The Capitol Complex — containing the High Court, Secretariat, and Vidhan Sabha — was added to UNESCO's World Heritage list in 2016 as part of Le Corbusier's recognised works. Hotels cluster around Sector 17, Sector 22, and the Madhya Marg corridor, with mid-range business properties dominant and a handful of 5-star options near Sector 8.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Chandigarh International Airport (IXC) sits 11 km south; trains from Delhi take 3–4 hours on the Shatabdi Express.
- Best season: October to March; summer temperatures regularly exceed 40 °C.
- Getting around: Auto-rickshaws and app-based cabs cover most sectors; the sector grid makes navigation straightforward.
