About Manāli

Manāli: Gateway to Himalayan High Passes

Manāli sits at 2,050 metres in the Kullu Valley of Himachal Pradesh, roughly 570 km north of Delhi. The Beas River runs through the valley floor, flanked by deodar forests and apple orchards. To the north, Rohtang Pass (3,978 m) connects Manāli to the Lahaul and Spiti districts — a route that draws motorcyclists, trekkers, and skiers between October and June. The older Old Manāli neighbourhood, clustered around the Manu Temple, retains stone-paved lanes and guesthouses separate from the resort strip along Mall Road.

Where to Stay

Most hotels concentrate along Mall Road and the Siyal area, with mid-range properties starting around ₹1,500/night. Old Manāli offers budget guesthouses with mountain-facing balconies. The Aleo and Prini suburbs, 2–4 km south, host larger resort properties with valley views and easier parking access.

Practical Tips

  • Season: April–June and September–November offer stable weather; Rohtang Pass closes December–April due to snowfall.
  • Altitude: Allow one day to acclimatise before trekking above 3,000 m.
  • Access: Bhuntar Airport (Kullu) lies 50 km south; overnight Volvo buses from Delhi take approximately 14 hours.
  • Permits: Foreign nationals require an Inner Line Permit to continue beyond Rohtang into Lahaul.
