About Hampi
Hampi: Ruins of the Vijayanagara Empire
Hampi sits on the banks of the Tungabhadra River in northern Karnataka, roughly 340 km north of Bengaluru. The site was the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire from the 14th to 16th centuries — at its peak one of the largest cities in the world, with a population estimated above 500,000. Portuguese and Persian traders wrote accounts of its wealth before the empire fell in 1565. UNESCO listed the Group of Monuments at Hampi as a World Heritage Site in 1986, and the protected zone covers over 4,100 hectares of boulder-strewn landscape dotted with more than 1,600 surviving structures.
Where to Stay
Most hotels concentrate in two areas. Hampi Bazaar, directly in front of the Virupaksha Temple, offers guesthouses within walking distance of the main ruins. Hospet (now Vijayanagara city), 13 km east, has a wider range of mid-range and business hotels with better road and rail access. The Anegundi village across the river provides quieter stays and access to the northern cluster of ruins.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Hospet Junction is the nearest railway station; trains connect to Bengaluru (roughly 8–9 hours overnight) and Hyderabad.
- Best season: October to February; temperatures stay below 32 °C and the ruins are walkable.
- Footwear: Carry sturdy shoes — the Royal Enclosure and Vittala Temple complex involve uneven stone paths over 2+ km.
- Site hours: Most monuments open 6 am to 6 pm; the Vittala Temple (home of the stone chariot) charges a separate entry fee.
