About Ooty

Ooty: Nilgiri Hill Station at 2,240 Metres

Ooty (officially Udhagamandalam) sits at 2,240 m in the Nilgiri Hills of Tamil Nadu, about 86 km north of Coimbatore. The British East India Company established it as a summer retreat in 1821, and colonial-era architecture still lines the slopes around Charring Cross and Charing Cross Road. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway — a UNESCO World Heritage rack railway built in 1908 — climbs from Mettupalayam through 16 tunnels and over 250 bridges to reach the town, covering 46 km in roughly five hours.

Where to Stay

Hotels cluster in three zones: the Commercial Road corridor near the bus stand suits budget travelers; Sylks Road and Fern Hill hold mid-range and heritage properties; and the Fingerpost area offers quieter hillside retreats. The Government Botanical Gardens (1848) anchor the eastern side of town and are within walking distance of most central hotels.

Practical Tips

  • Season: October–June is drier; monsoon (July–September) brings heavy mist and occasional road closures on the Ooty–Mysuru highway.
  • Temperature: Nights drop to 5–7 °C in January — pack warm layers regardless of travel month.
  • Train bookings: Reserve Nilgiri Mountain Railway seats at least two weeks ahead; demand exceeds supply year-round.
  • Altitude: Travelers arriving from sea level may feel mild fatigue on the first day.
