About Munnar

Munnar: Tea Estates at 1,600 Metres Above Sea Level

Munnar sits in the Idukki district of Kerala, roughly 130 km east of Kochi, at an elevation between 1,500 and 2,695 metres. The town is surrounded by contiguous tea plantations — many operated under the Kdhp (formerly Kannan Devan Hills Plantations) brand — that cover over 30,000 hectares of rolling hillside. The Eravikulam National Park, 15 km north of the town centre, protects the endangered Nilgiri tahr and includes Anamudi, the highest peak in peninsular India at 2,695 m.

Where to Stay

Most hotels cluster along Munnar town and the Kannan Devan Hills corridor toward Top Station, 32 km northeast. Properties range from budget guesthouses in the bazaar area to plantation-style resorts with valley views in Devikulam, 7 km south. The shoulder season — September through November and March through May — offers lower rates and clearer skies than the July–August monsoon peak.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: The nearest airport is Cochin International Airport (COK), approximately 110 km west; shared taxis take 3–4 hours via Kothamangalam.
  • Best viewpoint: Mattupetty Dam, 13 km from town, opens daily 9:30 am–6 pm.
  • Temperature: Nights drop to 5–10 °C between December and February — pack warm layers regardless of the season.
  • Permits: Entry to Eravikulam National Park requires an advance online booking during peak months.
