About Cochin
Cochin: Spice Trade Port on Kerala's Arabian Sea Coast
Cochin (officially Kochi) occupies a peninsula in Kerala, southwestern India, where the Arabian Sea borders a network of backwater lagoons. The city anchored the global spice trade from the 15th century onward. Fort Kochi district preserves Portuguese, Dutch, and British colonial architecture alongside Chinese fishing nets introduced around 1400 CE. The Kochi-Muziris Biennale, Asia's largest contemporary art exhibition, fills Fort Kochi's warehouses and courtyards every two years from December through March.
Where to Stay
Hotels concentrate in three zones: Fort Kochi for heritage guesthouses near the Santa Cruz Basilica (consecrated 1505); Ernakulam on the mainland for business hotels and direct rail access; and Cherai Beach, 25 km north, for seafront properties. The mainland and island are linked by state-run ferries running from Ernakulam Jetty.
Practical Tips
- Airport: Cochin International Airport is 30 km northeast; taxi to Fort Kochi takes roughly 45 minutes.
- Ferry: Ernakulam Jetty to Fort Kochi costs under ₹10 and takes about 25 minutes.
- Season: October to February brings dry weather; the southwest monsoon arrives in June.
