About Bandung

Bandung: Java's Highland City of Textiles and Volcanoes

Bandung sits 768 metres above sea level in a volcanic basin in West Java, roughly 150 km southeast of Jakarta via the Cipularang Toll Road. Founded as a Dutch colonial outpost in 1810, it grew into a centre of Art Deco architecture — the Savoy Homann Hotel (1939) and Gedung Sate (1920) remain intact along Jalan Asia-Afrika. The surrounding Parahyangan Highlands hold active craters including Tangkung Perahu and the sulphuric vents of Kawah Putih, 50 km south of the city centre.

Where to Stay in Bandung

Most hotels cluster around Dago in the north, a hillside neighbourhood of cafés and factory-outlet stores, and Braga, the restored colonial street that hosts weekend night markets. Buah Batu in the south draws longer-stay visitors near the Summarecon Bandung retail district. Budget guesthouses concentrate along Jalan Kebon Kawung, a short walk from Bandung Station.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Trains from Gambir Station in Jakarta take roughly 3 hours; Argo Parahyangan services run several times daily.
  • Climate: Cooler than coastal Java — average 23 °C — but afternoon rain is common September to March.
  • Local shopping: The Cihampelas strip specialises in denim and streetwear; Pasar Baru sells batik and fabrics wholesale.
