About Bandungan

Bandungan: Hill Town Above the Semarang Plain

Bandungan sits at roughly 900 metres elevation in Semarang Regency, Central Java, about 40 km south of Semarang city. The cooler air — averaging 18–22 °C year-round — draws weekend visitors from Semarang, Solo, and Yogyakarta seeking relief from lowland heat. The town is ringed by terraced flower farms supplying cut flowers to markets across Java, and the Pasar Bandungan flower market operates daily from early morning.

Gedong Songo Temples & Surroundings

The main cultural anchor is Candi Gedong Songo, a group of nine 9th-century Hindu temples attributed to the Mataram Kingdom, scattered across the slopes of Gunung Ungaran at 1,200–1,300 metres. A horse trail connects the temple clusters; the full circuit takes roughly two hours on foot. Hot spring pools near the site stay open to visitors throughout the week.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Angkot minibuses run from Ambarawa (12 km) and connect to trains at Stasiun Ambarawa; private car from Semarang takes about 60–75 minutes via the Bawen interchange.
  • Weather: Pack a light layer — evenings drop to 15 °C even in the dry season (May–September).
  • Crowds: Arrive at Gedong Songo before 09:00 on weekends to avoid tour groups from Semarang.
