Uluwatu: Cliff Temples and Surf Breaks on Bali's Southern Tip

Uluwatu sits at the southernmost edge of the Bukit Peninsula, roughly 25 km south of Kuta, perched on limestone cliffs that drop 70 metres into the Indian Ocean. The area is anchored by Pura Luhur Uluwatu, a 10th-century sea temple regarded as one of Bali's six directional sanctuaries. The daily Kecak fire dance performed at the temple's clifftop amphitheatre draws hundreds of visitors at sunset. Below the cliffs, reef breaks at Padang Padang, Bingin, and Suluban (Blue Point) rank among Southeast Asia's most consistent surf spots, attracting competitive surfers from April through October.

Where to Stay

Accommodation clusters along the cliff edge and down narrow access lanes toward the beaches. Jimbaran Bay, 10 km north, offers calmer water and a wider selection of mid-range hotels. The Uluwatu–Bukit area itself ranges from bare-bones surf hostels at Bingin Beach to cliff-top villas above Dreamland Beach. Most properties are small and independently operated; larger resort inventory sits closer to Nusa Dua, 18 km east.

• Getting there: Ngurah Rai International Airport is 20 km north; a metered taxi takes 30–45 minutes depending on traffic.
• Temple dress code: Sarongs are mandatory at Pura Luhur Uluwatu — rentals available at the gate.
• Surf seasons: April to October brings offshore winds and cleaner swells; November to March sees smaller, choppier conditions.
• Transport: Roads on the Bukit Peninsula are steep and narrow — a scooter rental gives the most flexibility for reaching multiple beaches.
