Sanur: Bali's Calm Eastern Shore

Sanur sits on Bali's southeast coast, roughly 16 km from Ngurah Rai International Airport and sheltered by a coral reef that keeps its waters flat and shallow. That reef, stretching the length of Sanur Beach, is the main reason the town attracts a different crowd than Kuta or Seminyak — swimmers, snorkelers, and older travelers who prefer calm water over surf. The town has been a resort destination since the 1960s, when the Bali Beach Hotel opened as the island's first large hotel.

Where to Stay and Getting Around

Accommodation runs from small family-run guesthouses on Jalan Danau Tamblingan to mid-range and 4-star beachfront resorts along the seafront promenade. The beach walk, roughly 4 km of paved path, connects most hotels directly without needing transport. Sanur Harbor is the departure point for fast boats to Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan, both reachable in 30–45 minutes.
