Aymavilles: Gateway to the Gran Paradiso Massif

Aymavilles sits in the Aosta Valley at roughly 650 metres elevation, 8 km west of Aosta city along the SR47. The town is anchored by the Castello di Aymavilles, a four-towered medieval fortress rebuilt in the 17th century and now managed by the regional government as a cultural venue. The Cogne valley (Val di Cogne) branches south from here toward Gran Paradiso National Park, Italy's oldest national park, established in 1922.

Where to Stay

Accommodation is small-scale — agriturismo farms, B&Bs, and a handful of mountain guesthouses spread across the commune and nearby hamlets. Visitors use Aymavilles as a quieter, more affordable base than Aosta itself, with direct road access to ski areas at Pila (reached via cable car from Aosta, 15 minutes by car) and summer trails into the park.

• Getting there: Trains run to Aosta station; from there, local buses cover the 8 km to Aymavilles in about 20 minutes.
• Best season: July–August for Gran Paradiso hiking; December–March for Pila skiing.
• Currency: Euro. Most guesthouses accept cards, but carry cash for farm stays.
