About Livigno
Livigno: Duty-Free Ski Resort at 1,816 Metres
Livigno sits in a high Alpine valley in Lombardy, 1,816 m above sea level, 12 km from the Swiss border near Zernez. The municipality holds a unique duty-free status (porto franco) granted in 1805, making fuel, alcohol, and tobacco significantly cheaper than elsewhere in Italy. Around 115 km of ski runs spread across Mottolino and Carosello 3000, two linked ski areas that suit beginners and intermediate riders. The snowpark at Mottolino is one of the largest in Europe for freestyle skiers and snowboarders.
Where to Stay in Livigno
Accommodation clusters along the two main streets — Via Saroch and Via Fontana — which run parallel through the elongated village. Hotels range from simple 2-star guesthouses near the gondola bases to 4-star spa properties on the quieter southern end near San Rocco hamlet. Summer visitors arrive for mountain biking on the Livigno Bike Park trails and for ultra-trail running events.
Practical Tips
- Access: The nearest train station is Zernez (CH), then bus or transfer; driving via the Munt La Schera tunnel costs a toll.
- Duty-free limits: Shoppers re-entering the EU customs zone face quantity limits on alcohol and tobacco.
- Season: Ski season runs late November to early May; summer season July–September.
