About Luco dei Marsi
Luco dei Marsi
Luco dei Marsi sits on the western edge of the Fucino plain in the Marsica district of Abruzzo, roughly 100 km east of Rome via the A24 motorway. The plain itself is one of Europe's largest drained lake beds — Lago Fucino was emptied in 1875 under Prince Alessandro Torlonia, converting 16,000 hectares of water into flat agricultural land. That agricultural legacy still shapes the local economy today, and the flat terrain makes the area immediately recognizable from the surrounding Apennine slopes.
Visitors come mainly for the Marsica valley's rural character and proximity to the Parco Nazionale d'Abruzzo, Lazio e Molise, whose main entrance at Pescasseroli lies around 40 km southeast. The town itself is quiet, with a medieval core and the Romanesque church of Santa Maria delle Grazie as a local reference point. Walkers and cyclists use Luco as a low-cost base for day routes across the Fucino plain and into the surrounding hills. The nearby town of Avezzano, 5 km north, provides a wider range of rail connections and services.
The A24 Rome–L'Aquila–Teramo motorway gives straightforward road access. Avezzano railway station, on the Rome–Pescara line, handles regional trains and is the practical transit hub for the area.
