Plan your stay in Avezzano, Abruzzo — gateway to national parks, ski slopes, and the historic Fucino plain, 110 km east of Rome.
Avezzano sits in the Marsica district of Abruzzo, central Italy, at roughly 700 metres above sea level on the drained bed of the former Lago Fucino. That lake — once the third-largest in Italy — was drained between 1854 and 1875 by Prince Alessandro Torlonia, leaving behind one of the most fertile plains in the Apennines. The city was almost entirely rebuilt after a catastrophic earthquake on 13 January 1915 killed around 30,000 people; very little pre-war architecture survives, giving the urban fabric a distinctly 20th-century character.
Visitors come primarily for access to the surrounding natural parks. Parco Nazionale d'Abruzzo, Lazio e Molise lies roughly 40 km to the south-east, while the ski slopes of Ovindoli are about 20 km to the north-east. The Fucino plain draws agricultural tourism, and the area around Tagliacozzo — 25 km west — attracts history-minded travellers interested in the 1268 Battle of Tagliacozzo. Avezzano also serves as a logistics hub for the broader Marsica territory, making it a practical overnight base rather than a destination in itself.
The city is served by the A24 Rome–L'Aquila–Teramo motorway, with the nearest exit at Avezzano. Rome is approximately 110 km to the west by road. The main railway station connects to Rome Tiburtina via the Rome–Pescara line, with journey times of roughly 1 hour 40 minutes on direct regional services.
