About Castellafiume

Castellafiume

Castellafiume is a small hill village in the province of L'Aquila, in the Abruzzo region of central Italy. Perched above the Liri river valley at roughly 700 metres above sea level, the medieval core retains its stone streets and a parish church dating to the 13th century. The surrounding Marsica territory was reshaped by the 1915 Avezzano earthquake, making Castellafiume's surviving historic fabric notable by regional standards.

Visitors arrive mainly for outdoor pursuits: the Parco Regionale Sirente-Velino lies within easy reach, offering trails for hikers and cyclists across limestone ridges and beech forests. The Fucino plain, one of the largest reclaimed lake beds in Europe, sits approximately 20 kilometres to the east and draws those interested in agricultural history and the area's Roman past. Anglers come for the Liri headwaters, and in winter, the ski fields of Ovindoli are around 30 kilometres away.

Accommodation in Castellafiume is small-scale — agriturismo farms and family-run guesthouses rather than large hotels. Most properties offer half-board given the village's limited restaurant options. The nearest rail connection is Avezzano station, about 18 kilometres to the east, served by regional trains from Rome Tiburtina in roughly 90 minutes.
