About Cappelle dei Marsi

Cappelle dei Marsi

Cappelle dei Marsi is a small comune in the Province of L'Aquila, Abruzzo, set on the eastern edge of the Fucino Basin at roughly 660 metres above sea level. The Fucino was once among Europe's largest inland lakes until Prince Alessandro Torlonia funded its drainage between 1854 and 1875, converting 16,000 hectares into agricultural land still farmed today for potatoes and sugar beet. Monte Velino (2,487 m) and the Sirente massif frame the western horizon, giving the plain an open, wide-sky character unlike most Apennine valleys.

The town sits approximately 8 km north-east of Avezzano, the commercial centre of the Marsica subregion. Travellers passing through tend to be cyclists on the 30 km Pista Ciclabile del Fucino, hikers accessing Parco Naturale Regionale Sirente-Velino, or history visitors heading to Alba Fucens — a Roman colony founded in 303 BC whose amphitheatre and basilica remain partly standing about 10 km south. Skiers reach the Campo Felice piste (1,550–2,065 m) in around 35 km by road.

Rail services from Avezzano connect to Rome Tiburtina in roughly 2 hours; the A24 motorway cuts the drive to about 90 minutes. Accommodation in and around Cappelle dei Marsi runs to agriturismo properties and small family-run guesthouses rather than large hotel complexes.
