About Scurcola Marsicana

Scurcola Marsicana

Scurcola Marsicana sits at roughly 750 metres in the Marsica sub-region of Abruzzo, in the province of L'Aquila. The town is best known as the territory where Charles of Anjou defeated Conradin of Hohenstaufen at the Battle of Tagliacozzo on 23 August 1268 — one of the decisive engagements of medieval Italian history. Charles later commissioned the Abbey of Santa Maria della Vittoria here to mark the victory; its ruins remain visible on the edge of the comune.

Visitors are typically hikers and history travellers moving through central Abruzzo, cyclists crossing the Fucino basin — once Europe's third-largest lake before its drainage was completed in 1875 — and guests attending agritourism stays in the surrounding Marsica farmland. The Monte Velino massif, peaking at 2,487 metres, rises to the north and draws trekkers in summer and autumn. Avezzano, the main service town of the Marsica, lies roughly 8 kilometres to the southwest and provides rail connections on the RomePescara line.

The comune has a small permanent population of around 1,500 residents. Accommodation options cluster around agriturismo properties on the Fucino plain rather than in the historic centre itself. Road access is via the A24/A25 motorway network; the nearest motorway junction is at Avezzano.
