Tagliacozzo Medieval Hill Town

Tagliacozzo is a medieval hill town in the Marsica district of Abruzzo, set at roughly 750 metres above sea level in the province of L'Aquila. Its name entered European history on 23 August 1268, when Charles of Anjou defeated the Hohenstaufen prince Conradin on the nearby plain — a battle that ended the Swabian dynasty's grip on southern Italy and reshaped the peninsula's political map for centuries. That event alone draws historians and medieval enthusiasts who come specifically to stand on the ground where the last Hohenstaufen campaign collapsed.

The town's centrepiece is Piazza Ovidio, a compact Renaissance square framed by porticoed palazzi that date to the 15th and 16th centuries. The surrounding streets retain a largely intact medieval layout — stone archways, narrow vicoli, and the collegiate church of Santa Maria delle Grazie anchor the historic core. Walkers use Tagliacozzo as a base for the Simbruini and Velino-Sirente regional parks, both within 30–40 kilometres. The Fucino plain, once the bed of a drained lake and now one of Italy's largest flat agricultural areas, lies immediately to the west and gives the valley an unusual open quality rare in Apennine terrain.

Visitors tend to arrive between April and October. The town hosts the Giostra Cavalleresca di Tagliacozzo each August — a historical pageant and jousting tournament that re-enacts the 1268 battle with period costume. Accommodation options are modest in number; most hotels and agriturismi are small-scale family-run properties suited to travellers seeking a quieter alternative to the busier L'Aquila, 55 kilometres to the north.
