About Monte/Monti
Monti: Rome's Oldest Rione
Monti is Rome's oldest rione, wedged between the Colosseum to the southeast and Via Nazionale to the north. The neighborhood takes its name from the three hills — Esquiline, Viminal, and Quirinal — that once defined its ancient boundaries. Its medieval street plan survives largely intact: narrow lanes like Via dei Serpenti and Via del Boschetto connect small piazzas where residents gather at aperitivo hour alongside tourists.
Visitors come for the rare overlap of antiquity and unhurried Roman daily life. The Fori Imperiali border Monti to the west, placing guests within a 10-minute walk of the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill without the crowds of the immediate Colosseum perimeter. The Cavour metro stop (Line B) sits at the district's northern edge, linking to Roma Termini in under five minutes. Hotels range from converted palazzo rooms on Via Panisperna to small boutique properties tucked behind Via Cavour; most properties are independently run and contain fewer than 30 rooms.
Practical note: Monti falls inside Rome's Limited Traffic Zone (ZTL), active daily from 06:30 to 18:00 and again from 23:00 to 03:00. Guests arriving by car must obtain a temporary permit code directly from their hotel before entering; automated cameras issue fines without prior warning. The nearest public parking garage is on Via Bonghi, roughly 600 metres south of Piazza della Madonna dei Monti.
