About Montemagno Monferrato

Montemagno Monferrato: Medieval Hilltop Village

Montemagno Monferrato is a medieval hilltop village in the Monferrato wine zone of Piedmont, northern Italy. The village sits roughly 30 kilometres east of Asti and about 80 kilometres from Turin. Its castle, the Castello di Montemagno, dates to the 12th century and dominates the surrounding Barbera d'Asti vineyards — this corner of Piedmont earned UNESCO World Heritage status in 2014 as part of the Piedmont Wine Landscapes.

Visitors come primarily for wine tourism. The local production centres on Barbera d'Asti Superiore and Grignolino, and several cantina tasting rooms operate within or just below the village walls. The surrounding hills also attract cyclists riding the established Monferrato routes that connect Asti, Casale Monferrato, and the smaller hilltop communes in between. Truffle season, running from October through December, draws food travellers who use Montemagno as a quiet base for day trips to the markets at Asti and Alba.

Accommodation in the village is small-scale — agriturismo properties and a handful of country hotels set among the vines. The nearest rail connection is Asti station, approximately 30 kilometres away, served by direct trains from Turin Porta Nuova in under an hour.
