About Montescaglioso
Montescaglioso
Montescaglioso sits on a limestone ridge 364 metres above sea level in Basilicata, overlooking the Bradano river valley and, on clear days, the Ionian coast. The town's defining landmark is the Benedictine Abbey of Sant'Angelo, founded in the 11th century and one of the largest monastic complexes in southern Italy. Its two cloisters and frescoed chapels draw historians, religious travellers, and day-trippers from nearby Matera, which lies roughly 15 km to the northwest along the SP175.
Visitors come for slow-travel reasons: the Sassi di Matera UNESCO site is close enough for a morning excursion, yet Montescaglioso itself remains quieter and less visited. The old centre — centred on Piazza Roma and the Chiesa Madre di Santa Maria Maggiore — offers Lucanian street food including peperoni cruschi (crispy dried peppers) and pasta con i fagioli made with local legumes. The town hosts the Festa di San Rocco each August, drawing pilgrims and musicians from across the region.
Montescaglioso is served by the SS7 Appia and regional buses connecting to Matera in about 25 minutes. The nearest airport is Bari Karol Wojtyła (BRI), approximately 70 km north, with connections to major Italian and European hubs.
