About Altamura

Altamura: Bread, Stone, and the Alta Murgia Plateau

Altamura sits on the Alta Murgia karst plateau in the Città Metropolitana di Bari, Puglia, roughly 45 km southwest of Bari. The city is best known for Pane di Altamura, a semolina sourdough loaf holding DOP status since 2003 — the first bread in the EU to receive the designation. Bakeries operating since the 13th century still use wood-fired stone ovens in the centro storico. The Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta, rebuilt after a 1316 earthquake, anchors the old town with a Romanesque-Apulian facade and a carved rose window that draws architectural historians from across Europe.

Where to Stay and Getting Around

Hotels concentrate near the Piazza della Repubblica and along Via Matera, with smaller guesthouses tucked inside the medieval lanes. Visitors arriving by rail use Altamura railway station on the Ferrovie Appulo Lucane line, which connects to Bari in roughly 80 minutes and to Matera in 30 minutes — making the city a practical base for both destinations.

Practical Tips

  • Best time to visit: April–June for mild plateau temperatures averaging 18 °C
  • Bread buying: Purchase Pane di Altamura directly from Forno Santa Chiara or the bakeries on Via Duomo before 10 a.m.
  • Nearby site: The Parco Nazionale dell'Alta Murgia begins at the city's northern edge and covers 68,000 hectares of steppe grassland
