About Santeramo in Colle

Santeramo in Colle

Santeramo in Colle sits at 473 metres on the Alta Murgia karst plateau in the Metropolitan City of Bari, Puglia. The town of roughly 26,000 residents is one of Italy's leading centres for upholstered furniture manufacturing — a sector that grew here from artisan workshops in the mid-20th century into an export-driven district known across Europe. The surrounding landscape is protected within the Alta Murgia National Park, established in 2004, covering 68,000 hectares of steppe grassland, dolinas and dry-stone masserie.

Most visitors arrive for trade fairs linked to the furniture sector or to walk and cycle the park's marked trails through grazing land and medieval farmsteads. The historic centre holds the Chiesa Madre di Santa Maria della Natività, rebuilt in the 18th century, and a small archaeological museum documenting Peucetian settlements from the 4th century BC. Alberobello and its UNESCO-listed trulli are 28 km south-east; Matera, in neighbouring Basilicata, is 42 km south-west.

Bari Karol Wojtyła Airport is approximately 50 km north-west, served by frequent bus and rail connections through Bari Centrale. Hotels in Santeramo in Colle are concentrated along the main corso and on the industrial perimeter, with options spanning small family-run guesthouses and business-oriented properties.
