About Alberobello
Alberobello
Alberobello sits in the Valle d'Itria, roughly 55 km southeast of Bari, in the Puglia region of southern Italy. The town is defined by its trulli — circular dry-stone dwellings with conical limestone roofs — recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. Around 1,500 trulli are concentrated in two historic districts: Rione Monti, where most tourist accommodation and shops cluster on the hillside, and the smaller Aia Piccola across the valley, which remains largely residential and quieter.
Visitors come primarily to walk among the trulli and, increasingly, to sleep in one — dozens of converted trulli operate as holiday rentals or boutique rooms. The town also serves as a base for day trips along the Valle d'Itria: Locorotondo is 7 km north, Martina Franca 15 km east, and the Castellana Grotte cave complex 30 km northwest. Summers draw heavy crowds; April–June and September–October offer mild temperatures with fewer day-trippers.
Alberobello is accessible by Ferrovie del Sud-Est train from Bari Centrale, with a journey time of approximately 90 minutes. The town centre and both trulli districts are walkable from the single train station.
