About Fasano

Fasano

Fasano sits in the Murge plateau of Puglia, roughly 60 km south of Bari and 15 km inland from the Adriatic. The town is the administrative centre of a municipality that stretches from the coastal resort of Savelletri — where posidonia-rich waters draw divers and sailors — up through the Selva di Fasano hill district at 390 m elevation, where summer temperatures drop sharply compared to the coast. This vertical range within one municipality is rare for southern Italy and defines how visitors move through the area.

The Fasano Safari Zoo, opened in 1973 on the edge of the Selva, is one of the largest drive-through wildlife parks in Italy and draws family visitors year-round. The surrounding Valle d'Itria fringe delivers the whitewashed trulli architecture associated with nearby Alberobello — a UNESCO World Heritage Site 18 km to the west — while the coastal strip around Savelletri and Torre Canne holds Blue Flag beaches and a Michelin-starred dining scene that has made the area a destination for food-focused travellers from Rome and Milan. Olive groves producing the DOP Collina di Brindisi oil cover much of the countryside between the coast and the plateau.

Fasano's rail station connects to Bari Centrale in around 55 minutes on the Adriatica line, making day trips feasible. The A14 motorway exit at Fasano-Ostuni is 8 km from the town centre.
