About Procida

Procida: Bay of Naples Island of Painted Harbors

Procida, the smallest inhabited island in the Bay of Naples at roughly 4 km², was named Italy's Capital of Culture in 2022 — a distinction that drew international attention to what locals had long protected: an unhurried fishing-village rhythm that larger neighbors Ischia and Capri traded away decades ago. The island's defining image is Marina Corricella, a 17th-century harbor stacked with lemon-yellow, terracotta, and rose-pink fishermen's houses that rise directly from the water. Above it sits Terra Murata, a medieval hilltop citadel that once served as the island's last refuge and still holds the 16th-century Abbey of San Michele Arcangelo.

Where to Stay

Accommodation clusters around three zones: Marina Grande (the ferry port, most transport-convenient), Marina Corricella (picturesque but steep alleyways limit luggage movement), and the quieter Chiaiolella lagoon on the western tip. Most properties are small guesthouses, converted fishermen's cottages, and boutique B&Bs; large chain hotels are absent from the island entirely.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Ferries and hydrofoils run from Pozzuoli (35 min by hydrofoil) and Naples Molo Beverello (roughly 1 hr by ferry).
  • Getting around: The island's roads are narrow; rent a scooter or use the local bus — private cars are discouraged for visitors.
  • Best season: April–June and September offer mild temperatures without August crowds.
  • Currency: Euro (EUR); card acceptance is limited at smaller trattorias, so carry cash.
