About Capri Island

Capri Island: Limestone Cliffs, Roman Ruins, and the Tyrrhenian Sea

Capri sits 5 km off the tip of the Sorrento Peninsula in the Gulf of Naples, rising to 589 metres at Monte Solaro. The island's two settlements — Capri Town and Anacapri — occupy terraced limestone slopes above a coastline punctuated by sea stacks called the Faraglioni. Roman Emperor Tiberius governed much of his empire from here between AD 27 and 37, and the ruins of Villa Jovis on the island's eastern cliff still attract historians and walkers. The Blue Grotto (Grotta Azzurra), a sea cave on the northwest coast, draws visitors by rowboat daily from April through October.

Where to Stay in Capri

Hotels cluster in two main zones. Capri Town, reached by funicular from the Marina Grande ferry dock, hosts most 4-star and 5-star properties along Via Camerelle and the Piazzetta. Anacapri, higher and quieter, offers smaller hotels and easier access to the Monte Solaro chairlift. Budget options are limited island-wide; advance booking is essential from June through August.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Hydrofoils from Naples Molo Beverello reach Marina Grande in 50 minutes; ferries take 80 minutes.
  • Getting around: Private cars are heavily restricted; taxis, buses, and scooters serve main routes.
  • Best season: May, June, and September balance warm weather with smaller crowds than July–August.
  • Pack light: Cobbled streets and steep paths make wheeled luggage impractical.
