About Capri
Capri: Limestone Cliffs, Blue Grottos, and the Tyrrhenian Sea
Capri is a 10.4 km² island in the Gulf of Naples, roughly 5 km off the Sorrentine Peninsula. The island divides into two municipalities — Capri town, perched at 142 m above the Marina Grande, and Anacapri, higher still near Monte Solaro (589 m). Roman emperor Tiberius ruled his empire from here for a decade (27–37 AD), building twelve villas across the island, the largest being Villa Jovis on the northeastern cliff edge. That imperial legacy draws historians, while the Blue Grotto (Grotta Azzurra) — a sea cave illuminated by refracted light — has anchored tourism since German painter August Kopisch publicised it in 1826.
Where to Stay
Hotels cluster in three zones. Marina Grande suits early ferry departures. The Capri town centro (Via Camerelle, the Piazzetta) places guests within walking distance of boutiques and the Gardens of Augustus. Anacapri offers quieter hillside properties and direct chairlift access to Monte Solaro's panoramic summit.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Hydrofoils run from Naples Molo Beverello (50 min) and Sorrento (25 min) year-round.
- Peak season: July–August; book hotels at least 8–10 weeks ahead.
- Blue Grotto: Rowboats enter only in calm seas; arrive before 10:00 to avoid queues.
- No private cars: Day-trippers cannot bring vehicles; taxis and minibuses are the island's only road transport.
