About Amalfi
Amalfi: Cathedral Town on the Tyrrhenian Cliffs
Amalfi sits at the base of Monte Cerreto, roughly 25 km southwest of Salerno on the Amalfi Coast (Costiera Amalfitana), a UNESCO World Heritage stretch since 1997. Once a powerful maritime republic that rivaled Venice and Genoa, Amalfi minted its own currency and established the Tabula de Amalpha — the medieval Mediterranean's earliest maritime code — by the 11th century. The Duomo di Sant'Andrea, founded in the 9th century and expanded through the 13th, anchors the Piazza del Duomo and remains the architectural centerpiece of the town.
Where to Stay
Hotels cluster along the harbor front, up the Valle dei Mulini, and on the coastal road toward Atrani — the smallest municipality in southern Italy, a 10-minute walk east. Clifftop properties above the SS163 highway offer sea views; harbor-level hotels trade views for easier luggage access. Properties range from converted paper-mill buildings in the valley to 4-star sea-facing rooms on the waterfront.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Ferries connect Amalfi to Positano (35 min) and Salerno (75 min) from spring through October.
- Roads: The SS163 is single-lane in sections; book hotels with porter service to avoid steep stair climbs with luggage.
- Season: July–August brings peak crowds; April–May and September offer cooler temperatures and shorter queues at the Duomo.
