About Battipaglia

Battipaglia

Battipaglia sits on the Piana del Sele, the flat agricultural plain south of Salerno in Campania, roughly 10 km from the provincial capital and 80 km south of Naples. The city grew rapidly after World War II and today has around 50,000 residents. It is best known as a production hub for mozzarella di bufala campana, the DOP cheese made from the milk of water buffalo herds that graze the surrounding wetlands. Visitors travelling the A3 motorway between Naples and Reggio Calabria pass through here, making Battipaglia a practical overnight stop.

The city serves as a base for day trips across a wide arc of southern Campania. The Greek temples of Paestum — three of the best-preserved Doric temples in the world, dating to the 6th and 5th centuries BC — stand just 20 km to the south along the SS18. The Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park begins immediately beyond, offering limestone gorges, hill villages, and coastline along the Tyrrhenian Sea. Salerno's medieval old town and the Amalfi Coast are reachable within 30 minutes by car or regional rail from Battipaglia station.

Battipaglia station is served by Trenitalia Intercity and regional trains on the NaplesReggio Calabria line, with direct connections to Salerno (12 min) and Naples Centrale (about 55 min). Hotels in the city centre and near the station are the most practical options for travellers without a car.
