About Santa Tecla

Santa Tecla

Santa Tecla is a small coastal frazione of Acireale, sitting on Sicily's Ionian shore roughly 15 kilometres north of Catania. The settlement sits directly on a shelf of ancient lava flows that reach the sea, forming the dark rock coves characteristic of the Riviera dei Ciclopi. Mount Etna rises visibly to the southwest, giving the waterfront an unobstructed volcano backdrop that distinguishes it from mainland beach resorts.

Most visitors arrive as part of a wider eastern Sicily circuit combining Taormina (40 km north) with Catania and the Etna foothills. The local beach of Santa Tecla, a narrow lava-pebble strip below the old tonnara district, draws day-trippers from Acireale during summer. Accommodation tends toward small family-run hotels and B&Bs rather than large resort chains, keeping the area quieter than nearby Giardini-Naxos.

Catania Fontanarossa Airport is approximately 20 kilometres south via the SS114 coastal road. Trenitalia regional trains stop at Acireale station, around 3 kilometres inland, with connections to Catania in under 20 minutes.
