Nestled on the west bank of the Tiber River, the Vaticano/Prati district combines one of the world's most significant religious sites with one of Rome's most livable and well-organized neighborhoods. Whether you're drawn by the art-filled halls of the Vatican Museums or simply want to stroll broad, tree-lined avenues away from the city's more chaotic centro storico, this district delivers a distinct and rewarding Roman experience.
The district takes its identity from two very different but complementary presences. Vatican City, the independent city-state and seat of the Roman Catholic Church, anchors the area with St. Peter's Basilica and its sweeping colonnade designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Nearby, Castel Sant'Angelo — originally built as a mausoleum for Emperor Hadrian in the 2nd century AD — stands as one of Rome's most recognizable fortresses, connected to the Vatican by the elevated corridor known as the Passetto di Borgo. Together, these landmarks make this corner of Rome one of the most historically layered in the entire city.
Prati, which translates roughly to "meadows," was developed in the late 19th century following the unification of Italy and the incorporation of Rome as the national capital. Unlike much of Rome's ancient center, Prati follows a rational grid plan with wide streets and elegant Liberty-style buildings. Via Cola di Rienzo is the neighborhood's main commercial artery, lined with food shops, clothing stores, cafes, and bakeries that serve a largely local clientele. This makes Prati a genuine residential district rather than a tourist enclave — a useful distinction for travelers seeking an authentic slice of everyday Roman life.
