Santa Marinella sits on the Tyrrhenian coast of Lazio, roughly 60 km northwest of Rome — close enough for a day trip, attractive enough to anchor a longer stay. The town's shoreline stretches along a natural bay protected by the promontory of Santa Severa, where a medieval castle built over Roman ruins still dominates the waterfront. That castle, Castello di Santa Severa, dates to the 15th century and now houses a museum and a youth hostel inside its walls.

Visitors arrive mainly from Rome seeking the closest clean beach to the capital. The town draws families in summer for the sandy Lungomare beaches and shallow water, and cycling tourists year-round on the Via Aurelia coastal route. The local seafood — particularly mazzancolle prawns and sea bass from day-boat fishermen — appears on menus steps from the shoreline. A quieter crowd comes in spring and autumn when the Castello di Santa Severa hosts open-air events and the beaches are uncrowded.

Santa Marinella is served by direct Trenitalia regional trains from Roma Termini in approximately 55 minutes, making car-free access straightforward. The town centre clusters around Piazza Trieste, within walking distance of both the main beach and the rail station.
