About Orvieto Scalo
Orvieto Scalo: The Valley Floor Below the Tufa Cliff
Orvieto Scalo sits on the valley floor of the Paglia River, roughly 200 metres below Orvieto proper, which crowns a sheer volcanic tufa plateau in southern Umbria. The Scalo developed around the Orvieto railway station, a stop on the Rome–Florence main line that places the town about 90 minutes from Rome Termini and 2 hours from Florence Santa Maria Novella. The funicular from the station to the hilltop runs every 10 minutes and covers the climb in around 8 minutes.
Where to Stay
Hotels in Orvieto Scalo offer flat, accessible accommodation close to the station, a practical base for day trips along the A1 motorway corridor or into the Orvieto DOC wine zone. Guests staying here reach the Duomo di Orvieto — begun in 1290 and housing Luca Signorelli's frescoes — within 20 minutes door to door via funicular and a short walk. The Scalo also borders the Lago di Corbara reservoir to the west, popular for cycling routes through oak and chestnut woodland.
