About Castel Rigone
Castel Rigone
Castel Rigone is a medieval hilltop village in Umbria, Italy, perched at roughly 650 metres above Lake Trasimeno — the largest lake in central Italy. The village dates to the 12th century and retains its original stone streets, a Renaissance church (the Sanctuary of the Madonna dei Miracoli, built 1494), and views across the lake toward Tuscany. The population numbers only a few hundred residents year-round, giving the area a pace that larger Umbrian towns like Perugia, 30 km to the southeast, do not offer.
Visitors come primarily for lake access, hiking the wooded Apennine foothills, and cycling routes that circle Trasimeno. Birdwatchers target the lake's reed beds, home to herons, cormorants, and migratory waterfowl. The surrounding countryside produces olive oil and regional wines under the Colli del Trasimeno DOC designation. Castiglione del Lago, the main lakeside town, sits roughly 15 km southwest and provides ferry connections to the lake's islands.
The closest rail station is Tuoro sul Trasimeno, approximately 6 km from Castel Rigone. Perugia Umbria International Airport is about 40 km away. Most properties in the area are agriturismo farms or small guesthouses rather than large hotels.
