About Assisi

Assisi

Assisi sits on the western slope of Monte Subasio in Umbria, 190 km north of Rome and 25 km east of Perugia. The town is inseparable from St. Francis, born here around 1181, and from the double Basilica di San Francesco — construction began in 1228, the year of his canonisation. UNESCO listed the Franciscan structures and the surrounding valley in 2000. Roughly 4 million visitors arrive each year, making this one of Italy's most visited towns despite a resident population of under 30,000.

Most hotels cluster inside the medieval walls between Piazza del Comune and the Basilica, with a secondary strip along Via Frate Elia below the lower church. The Rocca Maggiore fortress crowns the hill above Piazza San Rufino and offers orientation views across the Spoleto valley. Pilgrimage traffic peaks in October for the Feast of St. Francis (4 October) and again in spring around Easter; rates and occupancy follow that cycle closely.

Assisi is served by Perugia San Francesco d'Assisi Airport, 12 km west, with connections to Rome Fiumicino and several European cities. A shuttle links the airport to Assisi railway station in Santa Maria degli Angeli, 4 km below the hill, from where buses reach Piazza Matteotti inside the walls in under 15 minutes.
