About Spoleto

Spoleto: Umbrian Hill Town with a Medieval Fortress and Festival Legacy

Spoleto sits in the Valnerina valley of southeastern Umbria, 130 km north of Rome. The city rose to prominence under the Lombard duchy in the 6th century, and its medieval core remains largely intact. The Rocca Albornoziana, a 14th-century papal fortress, dominates the skyline above the old town. Below it, the Ponte delle Torri — a 230-metre aqueduct bridge dating to the 13th or 14th century — spans the Tessino gorge at a height of 76 metres. The Duomo di Santa Maria Assunta, consecrated in 1198, holds Fra Filippo Lippi frescoes in the apse.

Who Visits and Why

Spoleto draws two distinct audiences. Arts travellers arrive in late June and early July for the Festival dei Due Mondi (Festival of Two Worlds), founded in 1958 by composer Gian Carlo Menotti; the programme spans opera, dance, and theatre across open-air venues in the historic centre. A second wave of visitors comes for Umbrian food and landscape — black truffles from Norcia, local Sagrantino wine from nearby Montefalco, and hiking trails through the Monte Luco forest, a protected sacred wood.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Spoleto has a direct rail connection on the Rome–Ancona line; journey time from Rome Termini is approximately 1 hour 20 minutes.
  • Festival booking: Reserve accommodation 3–4 months ahead for the Festival dei Due Mondi (late June–mid July).
  • On foot: The upper town requires uphill walking; the city runs a free scala mobile (escalator) system linking several levels.
