About Orvieto

Orvieto

Orvieto rises 325 metres above the Paglia River valley on a plateau of volcanic tufa, in southern Umbria. The town has been continuously inhabited since at least the 7th century BC, when Etruscan settlers carved a labyrinth of tunnels, wells, and cisterns into the soft rock beneath the streets. Today, guided tours of the Orvieto Underground reveal more than 1,200 mapped cavities directly below the medieval centre.

The Duomo di Orvieto, begun in 1290 under Pope Nicholas IV, anchors the town's identity. Its façade combines Romanesque striped marble and Gothic spires with gold mosaic panels and Lorenzo Maitani's relief sculptures — among the most detailed carved stone programs in Italy. The adjacent Museo dell'Opera del Duomo holds works by Luca Signorelli and Arnolfo di Cambio. Most visitors arrive on a day trip from Rome (roughly 1 hour 15 minutes by direct Frecciabianca from Roma Termini), though overnight stays allow access to the Rupe cliff-walk and local Orvieto Classico DOC white wine, produced from Grechetto and Trebbiano grapes grown on volcanic soils just outside the walls.

The funicular from the lower town of Orvieto Scalo runs daily and deposits passengers near Piazza Cahen, a short walk from the Duomo. Hotels range from medieval palazzo conversions inside the walls to agriturismo properties among the vineyards below the cliff.
