About Taormina
Taormina: Clifftop Sicily Above the Ionian Sea
Taormina sits on a rocky terrace 204 metres above the Ionian Sea, on Sicily's northeast coast roughly 50 km south of Messina. The town's centrepiece is the Teatro Antico di Taormina, a 2nd-century BC Greek theatre later enlarged by Rome, where summer concerts and film festival screenings still fill the ancient cavea. From its upper tiers, the snow-capped cone of Mount Etna — Europe's tallest active volcano at 3,357 m — frames every performance. The main pedestrian artery, Corso Umberto I, connects Porta Messina to Porta Catania through a sequence of medieval palaces, Norman doorways, and Baroque fountains.
Where to Stay in Taormina
Hotels cluster along three distinct bands. The clifftop centre — around Piazza IX Aprile and Via Roma — suits travellers who want to walk everywhere. The Mazzarò district below, reached by cable car from Via Luigi Pirandello, sits beside a pebble beach and caters to sea-focused stays. A handful of properties occupy the quieter Castelmola ridge 5 km uphill, above the town itself.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Taormina-Giardini station lies 3 km below town; taxis and buses connect to the centre in about 10 minutes.
- Cable car: Runs from Via Pirandello to Mazzarò beach; closed Tuesdays for maintenance.
- Teatro tickets: Book at least two weeks ahead for July–August performances.
- Driving: The town centre is a ZTL (restricted traffic zone); confirm hotel access codes before arrival.
