About Randazzo

Randazzo

Randazzo sits at 765 metres above sea level on the northern slopes of Mount Etna, roughly 15 kilometres from the active crater. Founded in the medieval period, the town is built almost entirely from black lava stone quarried from the volcano itself — giving its churches, palaces and streets a dark, distinctive character unlike anywhere else in Sicily. Three medieval parishes, Santa Maria, San Martino and San Nicolò, were historically assigned to the town's three ethnic communities: Latin, Lombard and Greek.

Visitors arrive to walk the intact medieval centre, photograph the Norman-era church towers, and use Randazzo as a base for Etna excursions. The Circumetnea narrow-gauge railway stops here, connecting the town to Catania in roughly two hours. Wine tourism draws additional travellers: the surrounding Etna DOC zone produces Nerello Mascalese reds from high-altitude vineyards, and several estates operate cellar-door tastings within a short drive.

Randazzo's compact hotel and accommodation offer covers guesthouses, agriturismo properties and a small number of boutique rooms — most within walking distance of Piazza Municipio. Catania Fontanarossa Airport is approximately 60 kilometres south via the A18 motorway.
