About Venice

San Marco suits first-time visitors staying within walking distance of the Doge's Palace and the Rialto Bridge; Dorsoduro attracts a quieter crowd near the Gallerie dell'Accademia and the Zattere waterfront; Cannaregio offers the most affordable hotels along the Fondamenta della Misericordia. Most visitors stay three to four nights. Marco Polo Airport is 8 km north, reachable by Alilaguna water bus in about 70 minutes or by taxi boat in 30.

Where to Stay in Venice's Six Sestieri

San Marco places guests metres from the Basilica di San Marco and the Grand Canal vaporetto stops, though it carries the highest nightly rates. Dorsoduro, across the Accademia Bridge, is calmer after 9 pm and convenient for the Peggy Guggenheim Collection on the Canal Grande. Cannaregio, the largest sestiere, runs from the railway station at Santa Lucia to the Jewish Ghetto — founded in 1516 and the oldest in Europe — making it practical for day trips to the mainland. San Polo and Santa Croce sit beside the Rialto market, open weekday mornings, and suit travellers who want central access with slightly lower prices than San Marco.

Getting Around

Venice has no roads. The vaporetto water-bus network covers all sestieri; Line 1 traces the Grand Canal end to end in 40 minutes. Traghetto gondola ferries cross the Grand Canal at six points for €2 per crossing. The Alilaguna airport line docks at Fondamente Nove and San Marco Zaccaria.

Practical Tips

  • Crowds: Carnival (February) and summer weekends draw peak crowds; shoulder season is March–April and October.
  • Water taxis: Book private water taxis in advance for luggage-heavy arrivals — standard transfer from the airport runs €110–140.
  • Venice Connected card: A 7-day vaporetto pass costs around €65 and covers unlimited water-bus rides.
  • Acqua alta: November to March sees periodic high tides; pack waterproof ankle boots.
