About Verona

The most convenient base in Verona is Centro Storico, within walking distance of the 1st-century Arena di Verona and Piazza Bra. San Zeno, west of the centre, offers a quieter setting beside the Romanesque basilica. Veronetta, across the Adige river, suits budget travellers and students. Most visitors stay two nights; Verona Villafranca Airport is 12 km from the centre.

Where to Stay in Each Quarter

Centro Storico covers the Roman grid between Piazza Bra and Piazza delle Erbe. Hotels here place guests within 5–10 minutes' walk of Juliet's House (Casa di Giulietta, Via Cappello 23) and the medieval Castelvecchio bridge. Rates rise sharply during the summer opera season, which runs July–September in the Arena.

San Zeno Maggiore, one of Italy's finest Romanesque churches (completed 1138), anchors the quiet western neighbourhood of the same name. Small hotels and B&Bs here attract repeat visitors who prefer cobbled streets without tour-group foot traffic.

Veronetta east of the Adige offers the lowest nightly rates in the city. The neighbourhood holds the Teatro Filarmonico and several university buildings; a 15-minute walk across Ponte Pietra reaches the Roman theatre.

Getting Around

Verona's compact centre is largely pedestrianised. The main train station, Porta Nuova, is 1.2 km south of Piazza Bra and served by Frecciarossa trains from Milan (75 min) and Venice (65 min). City bus lines 11, 12, and 13 connect the station to the centre in under 10 minutes.

Practical Tips

  • Opera season: Book hotels at least two months ahead for July–September Arena performances.
  • Airport transfer: ATV bus runs from Villafranca Airport to Porta Nuova station every 20 minutes; journey time 15 minutes.
  • Verona Card: A 24- or 48-hour pass covers entry to the Arena, Castelvecchio, and several churches — available at the tourist office on Piazza Bra.
  • Walking shoes: Central streets are paved with polished stone (selciato); flat-soled footwear prevents slipping.
